Soulful healing asks that while you are healing your body with herbs from the earth, you look for the meaning in what is happening within your body as it relates to your whole being. This is not a whiney or despairing “Why is this happening to me?” or a one-size-fits-all New Age generalization that you and you alone created your reality. The question is, “What is the deeper teaching in this experience?” “What is here for me?” “How can I make this experience an ally for my growth and transformation?

Patterns form invisibly and then descend into form. Life is a web of meaningful patterns. It takes an active open curiosity and passion to arrive clearly at your truth. And it must be your truth for it to have any import for you. When you are willing to “go there” the most magical healings happen. Miracles happen every day, but they often require the courage to look inward. It can be hard work to release limiting patterns of belief that we find, beliefs that have a part in keeping us ill. Bodies always tell the truth. “I’m fine, but I have a headache.” I feel fine, but my stomach is upset.” Really? I don’t think so. Being in a body it is as if we are born with a fierce and loving teacher who is within us and yet also contains us. This body is an embodiment of our greatest wisdom and consciousness, and yet a mirror of our greatest unconsciousness as well.

I’ve often said that our bodies love us enough to get sick for us, to draw our attention where it’s needed. I’ve found that bodies speak to us to call us to greater life, to more aliveness. They ask us to love ourselves more fully, to open our hearts to ourselves. An open heart is not always an easy thing to come by. As difficult as it may sound, I see illness as a call from our own soul, an invitation to go on an inner journey of exploration and discovery that leads us to realize we are already whole no matter what our condition. It is common to see illness as keeping us from living our lives or walking our true path, but the truth is that no matter where you are in any given moment, you cannot be off your path, your path is always under your feet.

One aspect of soulful healing that is most challenging and therefore most fruitful is the need to release a part of our story that may be lying underneath and behind the illness. Healing requires a willingness to re-write our story, the one we tell ourselves about what has happened in our lives and why it’s happened. There is often an emotional attachment to the pattern that doesn’t allow for easy change.
